A beautiful tattoo requires proper healing. Follow these instructions carefully to ensure your piece heals perfectly and stands the test of time.
Initial Care
Leave your bandage or Saniderm wrap on for the time specified by your artist (typically 3-5 days for Saniderm, or 2-4 hours for traditional wrap).
- If using Saniderm, it is normal for fluid (plasma, ink, and blood) to collect under the bandage.
- Remove the bandage in the shower. Let warm water run over it to loosen the adhesive, and pull gently parallel to the skin.
- Never rip the bandage off like a band-aid.
Cleaning
Once the bandage is removed, wash the tattoo immediately with warm water and an unscented, antibacterial liquid soap (like Dial Gold).
- Gently wash away all plasma and ointment using only your clean fingertips. Do not use washcloths, loofahs, or sponges.
- Rinse thoroughly with cold water to close the pores.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do not use a cloth towel, as it can harbor bacteria.
- Allow the tattoo to air dry for 10-15 minutes before applying ointment.
Moisturizing
Apply a very thin layer of artist-recommended aftercare ointment or unscented white lotion (like Aquaphor or Lubriderm).
- Rub it in completely. The tattoo should not look shiny or greasy. Over-moisturizing can suffocate the tattoo and cause ink loss.
- Wash and moisturize the tattoo 2-3 times a day for the first two weeks.
- Expect peeling and flaking after a few days. It will look like a sunburn peeling. Do not pick or scratch at the flakes. Let them fall off naturally.
What to Avoid
Direct Sunlight
Keep the healing tattoo out of the sun entirely; once healed, always use sunscreen.
Submerging in Water
No pools, baths, hot tubs, lakes or oceans until fully healed. Showers are fine.
Heavy Sweating
Skip strenuous workouts for the first several days.
Picking & Scratching
Let flakes fall on their own; picking pulls ink out.
